Introduction
Have you been writing poetry for some time? An opportunity to discuss work and examine progress in a workshop environment, led by a contemporary poet. Poems will be read and discussed in class.
By the end of this course, you will be able to: Shape and edit your poems more critically; Critique others' work more effectively; Be more confident when using a poetic form; Have a greater awareness of the range of contemporary poetry; Have a greater awareness of the range of contemporary poetry; Gain wider knowledge of opportunities for publication.
Students should be regular writers of poetry. They should have a good knowledge of contemporary poetry. They should be interested in publishing their work.
Each week you will be expected to write a homework poem in response to assignments, set by theme, form, or device.
Sharing your own work each week, discussing contemporary poetry, and participating in workshop feedback for fellow poets. A student may expect to have a poem 'workshopped' every two to three weeks. The pedagogic method is robust, lively, good-humoured discussion and argument. Students will also learn by a critical reading of published poems in class and through weekly homework exercises.
