The course will explore Graphic Narratives as genre, covering broad themes of Fantasy, Magic Realism, and Feminism.

First, we will explore the different forms that Graphic Narratives take, including books and web comics, alongside how they differ from super-hero comics and Japanese manga. During this time, we will also discuss how reading and interpreting images affects our understanding of the texts.

After discussing Graphic Narratives as a genre, we will read several examples that touch on themes of Fantasy & Magical Realism, each with a unique and distinctly feminine perspective. Students will consider topics such as how Fantasy and Popular Culture influence our everyday lives, how authors portray women in this genre, and how the genre of Graphic Narratives informs our conversations and thinking about these topics....
