Introduction
An RBT is a paraprofessional who works one-on-one or in small groups with clients and their families dealing with learning behavioural challenges. An RBT works under the guidance of a supervisor, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), to collect data and carry out treatment protocols or behaviour plans.
RBT training is useful for anyone interested in learning about behaviour. We designed our training at Moorpark College for community college students interested in working in schools, clinics, or in-home services. Our training is also appropriate for teaching assistants, educators, parents, or other individuals who would like to learn evidence-based behavioural strategies based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). You must be 18 or older and have a high school degree or equivalent.
Practically anyone would benefit from being introduced to evidence-based procedures based on the science of behaviour or applied behaviour analysis (ABA). Students will find the skills transfer to all facets of life. The following individuals would significantly benefit:
People who work directly with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Teachers or Teaching Assistants/Aids
After-school activity staff
Daycare staff and supervisors
Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists
Clinical Social Workers
Direct care staff in residential settings such as group homes
Hospital administrators and staff
Nursing supervisors or special needs staff
Home health aides
Emergency response teams
Case managers
Hospice staff and supervisors
Direct care staff
Parents
Anyone working with individuals who lack communication and self-care skills
Anyone working with individuals with challenging behaviour
The training will cover all of the tasks and subtasks on the RBT Task List. These courses teach evidence-based behaviour intervention techniques and strategies for individuals, including but not limited to:
behaviour measurement
assessment
skill acquisition
behaviour reduction
in-session troubleshooting
documentation and reporting
professional and ethical conduct
scope of practice
By the end of the 2.5 unit training, students will have all the training needed to take the Behavior Analyst Certification Board®, Inc. (BACB®) Competency Assessment. Upon passing the competency assessment, candidates will be able to apply and sit for the RBT credentialing exam.
