Computer technical support is the field of study involving computers in the areas of upgrade, repair, service and networking. The Diablo Valley College computer technical support certificate/degree program prepares students for entry-level employment in this industry. As a computer technical support student, you will gain an in-depth understanding of PC hardware, networking fundamentals, Windows operating system technologies and computer servicing. In addition, you will take a course that will help you prepare for the A+ Computer Technician exam, which is intended for individuals with six months or more of computer technical support work experience.
Students who have earned a certificate or degree in computer technical support are prepared for entry-level positions at a computer help desk, as a computer technician or as a network technician.
Why study computer technical support?
Students of computer technical support receive a broad exposure to many technical aspects of the computer industry including operating system installation and configuration, software configurations, network installation configurations and computer repair. Each course in the certificate program explores one of the various areas of technology including networking, computer hardware, software and network cabling.
What can I do with a computer technical support certificate/degree?
After a student has earned a certificate/degree in computer technical support, he or she should be well prepared to go directly into entry-level employment in the computer technical support field. In the San Francisco Bay Area, salaries range from $25,000 to $40,000 for entry level and network administrators can earn up to $80,000 or more with additional course work.
When are classes offered?
Computer technical support courses are taught in the days, evenings and weekends. Some short-term courses are also available.
How long will it take to earn a certificate?
Generally, students take 18 to 24 months to complete the courses required for the certificate as they are taught in a sequence.
Are there any unusual costs associated with this program?
In the case of the cabling courses, there are some additional expenses for the fiber-optic cabling equipment, and certification exam.
