Introduction
CIEL Program Mission
The mission of Dillard University’s Center for Intensive English Language (CIEL) is to provide international students in pursuit of meaningful language acquisition with a competitive edge on the English Language, American culture, diversification and the skills that are integral to becoming successful students and professionals. The objectives of the CIEL Program are:
- To provide students with reading, writing, listening, speaking skills, and cultural awareness.
- To cultivate an understanding of the language and study skills necessary for success as academic students in the United States, and especially at Dillard University.
- To foster intercultural awareness through meaningful classroom and off-campus experiences.
Placement, Evaluation, and Certificates
Prior to starting the Center for Intensive English Language (CIEL) Program, all in-coming students will be required to take a placement test. The placement test determines which of the six levels (basic, high beginning, low intermediate, intermediate, high intermediate, advanced) offered, a student will be placed into prior to the start of course sessions. Achievement is measured based on examination scores, homework, lab work, classroom performance, portfolios, and attendance. Student-teacher conferences and mid-term reports assist in evaluating the progress of students. Upon successful completion of all requirements for a session, students receive a Certificate of Achievement. Students who finish Level 6 receive a Certificate of Program Completion, along with a final report/transcript.
Reading & Writing Course
This class aims to engage participants in the writing process. It discusses knowledge and understanding of culture and explores the rhetorical purpose of personal narrative and cultural response.
