With Fanshawe's Broadcast Journalism – Television News program, you'll learn to find the heart of every story and gain the technical knowledge to share it with your audience in a variety of mediums. Graduate from this exciting 8-month graduate certificate program with the practical journalism training and experience you need for a career as a journalist, videographer, producer, editor, or writer.
Your Learning Experience
The world of journalism is constantly changing, requiring a diverse skill set across television and digital media. Our industry-trained and experienced faculty will teach you how to write effective news stories and shine in front of a camera, as well as how to operate cameras, edit footage, write captivating news copy and conduct compelling interviews. You’ll also gain comprehensive knowledge of television and digital media production, directing, and research, graduating as a versatile videographer, capable of adapting to any situation and work environment.
Take your media career to the next level, by studying in Canada’s premiere broadcasting center, an industry-leading live news studio, and a green screen facility. You will apply your learning in a hands-on working environment creating current content for and producing a weekly live news program that airs on Rogers TV. You’ll also have the opportunity to expand your portfolio of experience and network with industry connections during a two-month internship in a newsroom. Graduate with a diverse set of storytelling skills that are applicable in a variety of media jobs.
For students interested in studying further, Brock University and Fanshawe College have developed an articulation agreement, which gives you the opportunity to obtain a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies, as well as a graduate certificate in Broadcast Journalism - Television News. Students may start at either institution and receive credit transfer, graduating with both a degree and graduate certificate in only four years.

Program Residency
Students Must Complete a Minimum of 10 credits in this program at Fanshawe College to meet the Program Residency requirement and graduate from this program
Program Outcome
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to
- Research, write, and read prepared news stories ethically and independently, for delivery on multiple platforms.
- Write news scripts for broadcast by interpreting the credibility of facts and sources while assessing causes, consequences, and likely implications of the news to the audience.
- Perform all functions required of a team for the studio production of a news presentation.
- Broadcast breaking news that originates outside the studio.
- Observe, evaluate, and broadcast weather and its local impact.
- Review and edit stories prepared by others for station presentation.
- Shoot and edit video news stories using industry-standard hardware and software.
- Perform all journalistic duties in accordance with ethical requirements of the Radio Television Digital News Association Code of Ethics, Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, and federal copyright restrictions.
- Evaluate news items of local, national, and international significance.
- Build contacts and relationships in local news communities (news ‘beats’) and with other journalism professionals.
- Create a portfolio of work that demonstrates a wide variety of skills.
