Introduction
Learning Aims and Outcomes
The diploma course is a one year option to cover the key elements of design and making mosaics for art students who want a broad knowledge of mosaic making, its history and potential.
Course Outline
- Mosaic Fabrication: Techniques and Application
Introduction to tools, techniques and materials; studying surfaces and substrates; Term 1 Roman Mosaics working with hammer and hardie using marble; Term 2 Byzantine Mosaic working with hammer and hardie using smalti; working with other standard mosaic materials and nippers; Term 3 Individual project, making frames, documenting and marketing work (60 credits) - History of Mosaic
Classical and Roman Mosaics, Byzantine and Western Mosaics from the 4th Century (For the Diploma only students there are a couple of extra sessions to give them an overview into Modern and Contemporary Mosaics) (30 credits) - Mosaic Design: Concept and Realisation
Term 1 Design elements and geometric form (andamenti, cartoon making, scaling); Term 2 colour theory, life drawing and contextual studies (30 credits)
Progression
On successful completion of our Diploma in Mosaic Studies, the student can apply to continue their studies into the 2nd year on our Degree Course.

There are regular Open Days where prospective students can learn about the course.
Part-Time
Students are expected to complete the course in 2 years. They will take 60 credits each year instead of the 120 in full-time mode.
